Fillings and crowns are bonded to your tooth, but they do not last forever. Over time, the cement can weaken, decay can form underneath, or biting forces can loosen them. When one comes off, the underlying tooth structure is exposed. This tooth is weaker than a healthy tooth and more sensitive to temperature and pressure. Without the protective covering, decay can move fast.
What to Do Until You Get Here
If your crown came off in one piece, you can try placing it back on the tooth with a dab of denture adhesive or toothpaste as a temporary hold. Avoid chewing on that side. If a filling fell out, keep the area clean and avoid very hot or cold foods. Do not try to glue anything permanently. Call us and we will get you in quickly, usually the same day.
How We Fix It
We start by examining the tooth to make sure there is no new decay underneath. If the tooth is healthy, we can often re-cement the original crown or place a new filling in one visit. If there is new decay, we clean it out first, then restore the tooth. For crowns that cannot be reused, we can place a temporary crown while a new permanent one is made.
